Gates leaves Microsoft to focus on philanthropy

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Sensing the start of a personal computer revolution, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University in 1975 to start Microsoft Corp and pursue a vision of a computer on every desk and in every home.

Three decades later, Gates is set to step down on Friday from what is now the world's largest software company to work full-time at the charitable organization -- the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -- built by his vast fortune.

No longer the world's richest man -- he has been topped by investor Warren Buffett and Mexico's telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim -- Gates says great wealth brings with it great responsibility.

Lehman's Fuld, McDade to Forgo Their 2008 Bonuses
    By Yalman Onaran

June 27 (Bloomberg) -- Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Chief Executive Officer Richard Fuld and President Herbert ``Bart'' McDade will forgo 2008 bonuses, the biggest chunk of their pay, after the fourth-largest U.S. securities firm reported its first quarterly loss since going public.

Fuld and McDade told managing directors of their decision earlier this week, said two people with knowledge of the matter, who declined to be more specific because the discussions were private. Lehman slumped 70 percent in New York Stock Exchange composite trading during the past 12 months, the second-worst performance in the 11-member Amex Securities Broker/Dealer Index after E*Trade Financial Corp.

``I'd be surprised if other CEOs didn't give up their bonuses this year,'' said Jeanne Branthover, the New York-based head of the financial-services practice at Boyden Global Executive Search. ``Fuld is preparing his guys for what's coming for them. He's setting an example because the troops will also get shrunk bonuses.''

Fuld, 62, was paid $40 million last year when New York-based Lehman posted record earnings, and about 98 percent of his compensation was in a bonus. By contrast, John Mack, Morgan Stanley's CEO, received only a salary of $800,000 last year after earnings at the second-largest U.S. securities firm by market value plunged 57 percent and all the members of Bear Stearns Cos.' executive committee gave up their bonuses.

Fuld's 2007 compensation included a $4.3 million cash bonus, $35 million in restricted stock and $750,000 in salary. He got $40.5 million in 2006.

    Shares Fall

Lehman fell 26 cents to $22.35 at 9:38 a.m. in composite trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The New York Times reported the decision on bonuses earlier this week on its Web site.

Fuld promoted McDade, 49, to president earlier this month to help shore up investor confidence about the firm's prospects. McDade, the former head of equities who had also supervised fixed income, will work with Fuld to rebuild Lehman after mortgage- related writedowns led to the $2.8 billion second-quarter loss, the first loss since the company was spun off from American Express Co. in 1994. His pay and bonus weren't itemized last year in Lehman's corporate filings.

McDade has brought back two former associates, Michael Gelband and Alex Kirk, giving them expanded roles. Gelband, 49, who was ousted last year as head of fixed income, was named chief of the firm's capital markets businesses, a new post that encompasses equities and fixed income. Kirk, 48, who left in February as head of credit products, was picked to oversee Lehman's investments.

    Mounting Losses

Lehman may report a loss of more than $700 million in fiscal 2008 after earnings rose 5 percent last year to $4.2 billion as so-called hedges on its mortgage holdings staved off losses, according to a survey of 18 analysts by Bloomberg. Losses at Lehman surged in the second quarter when the hedges didn't work.

Richard Bove, an analyst at Ladenburg Thalmann & Co., lowered his 2008 estimate for Lehman to a loss of $3.66 a share from a previous loss estimate of $3.19. He reduced his share- price target to $27 from $30, according to a note Ladenburg Thalmann published today.

    new start

well, just finished a farewell party with fellow MAs in Citi.

we went to Pier 11 at Marina South, very nice ombience, cool blazing night with Miditerranean cuisine and you have a good sea view. What else you want? Our conclusion is it is a place more for proposing rather than group gathering :D

I had Tenderloin medium done and it was just fantastic, soft and melt in mouth. Only point I could mention is the chef could add a bit more salt and spice. BUt overall I liked it.

right, my last day in Citi is next Monday, and after a few weeks I will be joining Lehman Brothers in Hong Kong. The Financial Institution Group in the Investment Banking Division.

Things are getting tougher these days, as Lehman posted a second quarter loss of US$2.8 billion and ousted its CFO and COO yesterday.......

Surely I have confidence in the firm. But still fingers crossed.

    tailor

    cfa

    Ex-Citibanker

    Now I am a so called ex-Citibanker.

One colleague of mine once joked "Once a Citibanker, Forever a Citibanker". True enough, Citibankers are everywhere, Citi is like the university of the banking industry. The other joke always heard is about the OCBC bank - "Old Citi Banker's Club". Jokes or not, it tells part of the story that Citi is indeed a good ground to launch your career. I do believe that and want to acknowledge that.

It has been almost 2 years as a Management Associate at Citi. As what my colleague said on her last day, probably only when you resign you start to realize the most important things are the people you met, the friends you made, not the deals you worked on, not the RFP you won. In deed, I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with a group of very talented MA peers on various projects (though most of which were non-business related assignments and we complaint a lot about these things), the bond we established will remain and keep us together in years to come. It was again my previlige to work with a team of senior transactors in the Debt Capital Markets division, it is those nice people that I still care keeping in touch though we are all in different firms now.

Having said that, the MA programme still provides many good exposures for junior bankers, especially someone like me who were lack of prior experience in this sector. I loved the training in Shanghai, I hate to say but that was the best highlight. The course it fantastic, the instructors are fantastic (when I unexpectedly met one of the instructors - Andrew Regan in another course this year I was so happy! Btw, he is definately one of the best, his notes on the FIG sector valuation methods are just terrific...), the participants are fantastic, the food the place and the city and the night life (after course drinks) are all irresistable... Too much about that, some serious stuff. The MA programme provides on the job rotations among various departments in the bank, each takes 3mths. I thought overall it was a clever idea but you need to be a bit lucky to be assigned the department where you want to be. In my opinion, there is too much focus on traditional banking but less on sales & trading, capital markets and/or investment banking.  Well, there are factors the programme sponsor couldnot help too...too bad my friend...It might not be your cup of tea. (Anyone wants to know more about the programme, please contact me directly)

Back to the topic of today,  I TENDERED MY RESIGNATION @ 6PM.

    Time to move on, friend.

    Lehman Brothers
